This walk begins with Portuguese breakfast traditions. We meet at a beautiful plaza near the river Tejo in a traditional Quiosque (street café) where you choose amongst the various types of Portuguese coffee and two sample pastries: "pastel de nata" and "queijada de Sintra". The walk then takes us to the traditional Mercado da Ribeira to enjoy the hustle and bustle of fruit and vegetable stalls, fishmongers, butchers and salted cod merchants. Portuguese fish is world renowned as demonstrated by the preserved sardine industry and the famous “bacalhau" (salted cod). We will learn about the lives and stories of Portuguese fishermen and the different species caught along our extensive Atlantic coast.
We then walk up to the neighbourhood of São Bento (remember that Lisbon is built on 7 hills, and we will gently ascend one of the easiest ones), where we taste a contemporary take on a Lisbon classic: "pataniscas de bacalhau” accompanied by a refreshing glass of "vinho verde". Following on, we experience one of the great exports from Portugal to India and end in the traditional neighbourhood of Madragoa. The walk finishes in a relaxing setting, a family tasca where we sit down to eat the quintessential Portuguese “arroz de marisco” (seafood rice) with a taste of selected wines from the Alentejo region.
The walk is conducted at an easy pace with lots of stops, making it suitable for Lisbon lovers of all ages. We can accommodate some food sensitivities, but bear in mind that Portuguese food is not vegetarian friendly and features meat, fish and dairy. Gluten-free can be accommodated on request.
